How to choose a natural gas pressure regulator

Start with the pressures: the inlet pressure range (bpu) and the outlet set point (Wd) decide the family.

High/medium pressure range
Transmission lines, city gates and compressor stations: the Reflux 819 takes 0.8 to 100 bar inlet and controls 0.3 to 74 bar, and the Staflux 187 accepts up to 250 bar.
Medium/low pressure range
District stations and industrial users fed at medium pressure: for example the Norval (design up to 18.9 bar, 1 to 8 inch) or the Dival 600 (design up to 20 bar).
Low pressure range
Service lines, meters and appliances: such as the FE two-stage regulator with integrated OPSO or the Goval double diaphragm safety governor (up to 1 bar).
Size for flow
Pietro Fiorentini sizes each regulator from its flow rate coefficient (Cg) and form factor (K1) as set out in EN 334, so give us the minimum and maximum flow and the lowest inlet pressure.

A working regulator is often protected by a monitor, set at a higher pressure, and by a slam shut valve; the Terval AP takes both on the same body (regulator, monitor and slam shut).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a pilot operated and a direct operated gas regulator?

A direct operated regulator balances the outlet pressure on a diaphragm against a setting spring, and the diaphragm moves the valve. A pilot operated regulator adds a pilot unit that loads and unloads the main diaphragm chamber, which gives tighter control over wide flow ranges. On this site, pilot operated models such as the Reflux 819 reach accuracy class AC 1, while direct operated models such as the Staflux 185 are rated up to AC 5.

What is EN 334 and which regulators does it cover?

EN 334 is the European standard for gas pressure regulators, and most models on this page are designed to it. It defines the accuracy class (AC), the lock-up pressure class (SG) and the fail open or fail close classification shown in each specification table. Gas governors for burners follow EN 88-1 instead, for example the Governors STD and Ratio Governors, and the USA market governors such as the Governor 2 PSIG are built to ANSI Z21.80.

Are these regulators suitable for hydrogen blends?

Several models are hydrogen ready for NG-H2 blending and carry the H2 Ready mark on this page. The flyers of the Aperflux 851, Reflux 819/FO and Terval AP state compatibility with 20% hydrogen blending, with higher blending on request.
