A smart gas meter adds an electronic index and remote communication to the measuring element, so readings, alarms and valve commands travel over NB-IoT, GPRS or wireless M-Bus.

Readings no longer need a site visit. Diaphragm-based models (RSE/RSV, HM, HM-iCON) and ultrasonic models (the SSM-iCON family) run from G1.6 residential sizes to 40 m³/h commercial connections, several with a shut-off valve, for gas networks and industry in Saudi Arabia and the GCC: the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.

How to choose a smart gas meter

  • Connection size

    Homes and flats: RSE/RSV (G1.6 to G6), SSM-iCON (0.04 to 6 m³/h). Commercial and light industrial users: HM and HM-iCON (G10, G16, G25, up to 40 m³/h) with integrated temperature and pressure sensors.

  • North American practice

    The SSM-iCON 250 and SSM-iCON 400 follow North American ANSI B109 practice, with cfh ratings and Sprague-type connections.

  • Network: RSE/RSV, SSM-iCON

    The RSE/RSV and SSM-iCON support NB-IoT, GPRS (2G) and RF wireless M-Bus at 169 MHz, and the RSE/RSV also 868 MHz; the RSE/RSV communication module is field replaceable, so the network can change later.

  • Network: HM, HM-iCON

    The HM-iCON offers NB-IoT or GPRS with a DLMS-based open protocol, and the HM uses GSM/GPRS.

  • Shut-off valve

    SSM-iCON: integrated shut-off valve triggered remotely or locally (temperature threshold). SSM-iCON 250 and SSM-iCON 400: close on temperature (fire), pressure or seismic events. RSE/RSV: optional valve for remote supply control and prepayment schemes.

  • Battery and replacement plan

    The HM-iCON metrology battery lasts 16 years in operation plus 1 in storage, with up to 16 years of NB-IoT communication; the RSE/RSV and SSM-iCON communication batteries last up to 20 years by radio type.

Frequently asked questions

What is a smart gas meter and how does it communicate?

It measures gas like a conventional meter but records the volume electronically and sends it to the utility data system. Pietro Fiorentini models use NB-IoT, GPRS (2G), Cat-M1 or RF wireless M-Bus, with DLMS-based protocols on the RSE/RSV, HM-iCON and SSM-iCON. Besides consumption, the HM-iCON, for example, reports faults, tampering and flow-rate errors.

Can a smart gas meter shut off the gas remotely?

Yes, on models with a valve. The SSM-iCON has an integrated shut-off valve triggered remotely or locally, for example above a temperature threshold. The SSM-iCON 250 and SSM-iCON 400 close on fire, pressure or seismic events and on a remote command. The RSE/RSV can be ordered with an integrated shut-off valve, used for remote supply control and prepayment.

What is a hybrid gas meter?

A hybrid meter keeps the established diaphragm measuring unit but replaces the mechanical register with an electronic totalizer and data transmission. The HM and HM-iCON add temperature and pressure sensors to compensate the measured volume. The HM is MID approved as a converter plus meter, configured as PTZ or PT, and shows both measured volume and volume at base conditions.

Can these meters measure hydrogen blends?

The RSE/RSV, HM-iCON and the SSM-iCON family are rated for natural gas blends with up to 20% hydrogen and are biomethane compatible, with higher blends on request according to their flyers. The HM technical brochure gives no hydrogen rating, so ask us before specifying the HM for blended gas.
