Multiphase Flow Meters (MPFM) in KSA & GCC

A multiphase flow meter (MPFM), also used as a well testing meter, supports well testing, production allocation and continuous well monitoring.

The range runs from the Flowatch 3i and Flowatch HS to the Totem and the Xtreme S wet gas meter, plus the WLR Meter for water cut, in 0.5 to 14 inch, all rated to 345 bar. Pietro Fiorentini supplies them for oil and gas production in Saudi Arabia and the GCC: the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.

Multi-phase measurement devices are in-line systems that provide real-time measurements of oil, water and gas flow rates. How to choose a multiphase flow meter

Start with the gas volume fraction (GVF) of the wells, then decide whether a radioactive source is acceptable.

Gas volume fraction (GVF)
The Flowatch 3i covers 0 to 92 percent GVF, the Flowatch HS 0 to 98 percent and the Totem the full 0 to 100 percent; all measure water cut from 0 to 100 percent.
Wet gas wells: Xtreme S
For wet gas wells at 90 to 100 percent GVF, with a Lockhart-Martinelli parameter below 0.3, the Xtreme S is the dedicated choice.
Higher accuracy: Flowatch HS
The Flowatch HS uses a Cs-137 gamma source in its patented fast gamma densitometer to reach higher accuracy; for example, its water cut uncertainty is 2 percent at 0 to 60 percent GVF.
Size and materials
The Flowatch 3i starts at 0.5 inch and the Flowatch HS at 1.3 inch; the Totem, Xtreme S and WLR Meter run 2 to 14 inch, with bodies in AISI 316, duplex or Inconel 625.
NACE and electronics
The Totem, Xtreme S and WLR Meter list NACE MR0175/ISO 15156; electronics carry ATEX/IECEx Ex d certification and use Modbus over RS-485/422 or Ethernet.
Water cut only: WLR Meter
If you only need water content, the WLR Meter measures water liquid ratio with a microwave resonator, stand-alone or built into a multiphase meter; Totem, Xtreme S and WLR Meter suit mobile well testing units.

What is the difference between a multiphase flow meter and a test separator?

A test separator splits the well stream into oil, water and gas in a vessel and meters each phase on its own. A multiphase flow meter measures the three phases in line and in real time, without separation. The Flowatch meters add a pressure drop below 1 bar and suit topside wellheads, offshore wellheads and floating units.

Why choose a multiphase flow meter without a radioactive source?

A meter with no radioactive source avoids the documentation, importation and handling issues that come with radioactive material, which simplifies shipping and site work. The Flowatch 3i, Totem and Xtreme S work this way. The Flowatch HS does use a Cs-137 source to reach higher accuracy, so the choice balances accuracy needs against source handling.

What do GVF and water cut mean for a multiphase meter?

Gas volume fraction (GVF) is the share of gas in the total flow volume at line conditions. Water cut, also called water liquid ratio (WLR), is the share of water in the liquid phase. A well at 95 percent GVF and 30 percent water cut is mostly gas, and 30 percent of its liquid is water. Each meter states the GVF and water cut range it covers.

Which meter suits a wet gas well?

Use the Xtreme S. It is a dedicated wet gas meter for 90 to 100 percent GVF and Lockhart-Martinelli values below 0.3. It combines a Venturi, a velocity meter and a microwave WLR sensor, with a typical gas rate uncertainty of 4 percent relative. For wells below 90 percent GVF, the Totem covers the full 0 to 100 percent range.
