A natural gas filter, also called a station filter or cartridge filter, stops dust, welding slag and other solid particles before they reach pressure regulators, valves and meters.

This page covers two Pietro Fiorentini ranges: the HFA-HFB dry gas filter for high and medium pressure up to 100 bar (filtration grades from 1 to 50 micron), and the Filters for Low Pressure for distribution lines up to 10 bar, supplied for gas networks and industry in Saudi Arabia and the GCC: the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.

5 micron cartridges

HFA-HFB filters to 5 micron as standard with 98% efficiency; 1, 3 or 50 micron on request.

Up to 100 bar

HFA-HFB design pressure up to 100 bar, with PN 16 or Class 150, 300 and 600 flanges.

Large dirt collection

Collecting capacity above 12% of total filter capacity, with a drain on the bottom part.

Clogging indicator option

Differential pressure clogging indicator, with or without a remote reed-contact switch, shows when cartridges need attention.

How to choose a natural gas filter

Start with the maximum pressure at the filter inlet, then size the cartridge for the flow.

  • Above 10 bar: HFA-HFB

Above 10 bar, for example in a pressure reduction and metering station, choose the HFA-HFB (design pressure up to 100 bar); it has no pressure limiting device: keep the inlet below its maximum allowable pressure.

  • Allowable pressure by flange

The allowable pressure depends on the flange class: 16 bar with PN 16, 19 bar with Class 150, 50 bar with Class 300 and 100 bar with Class 600, at 50 °C.

  • Cartridge sizing formula

    HFA-HFB filtering area: A = Q / (P x V x 3600), with Q the flow in Stm³/h, P the absolute pressure in bar and V the gas speed at the cartridge (0.33 m/s suggested).

  • Cartridge sizes

Cartridges run from G 0.5 to G 6 for line sizes from DN 25 to DN 300; the standard cartridge is 5 micron with 98% filtering efficiency.

  • Body type by piping

Pick the body that fits the piping: the HFA has in-line nozzles, the HFA TRC adds a quick-opening closure for vertical installation, and the HFB has nozzles at right angles.

Low pressure filters and maintenance

  • Low pressure filters

Filters for Low Pressure: aluminium alloy bodies (EN AB 46100) to DIN 3840 and EN 12516 for natural gas, LPG and other non-corrosive gases; the Mod. 50000 (10 bar) uses a 5 micron cloth cartridge.

  • Compact and 50 micron models

The Mod. 10000 (1/2 and 3/4 inch, 50 micron) protects wall mounted boilers, water heaters and light commercial appliances; the 106-106/F (10 bar) and 10210/F (2 bar) use 50 micron elements up to DN 150.

  • Maintenance

Both ranges collect more than 12% of the total filter capacity in the bottom of the body, with a drain; a clogging indicator (remote reed-contact switch optional on the HFA-HFB) shows a loaded cartridge.

  • What to send us

Our Al Khobar team can check filter sizing for stations in Jubail, Riyadh, Doha or Muscat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a gas strainer and a gas filter?

A strainer is a coarse screen that catches large debris. A gas filter uses a cartridge to hold back fine solid particles. The HFA-HFB cartridge is polyester felt on a drilled, reinforced steel support and filters to 5 micron as standard, while the Mod. 50000 low pressure filter uses a 5 micron cloth cartridge. Fine filtration protects regulators, valves and meters downstream and reduces their maintenance.

What micron rating is used for natural gas station filters?

The HFA-HFB dry gas filter has a 5 micron cartridge as standard, with 1, 3 or 50 micron grades on request and 98% filtering efficiency. In the low pressure range, the Mod. 50000 filters to 5 micron, while the Mod. 10000, 106-106/F and 10210/F are 50 micron, with 150 or 300 micron on request for the 106 and 10210 models. Match the grade to what the downstream regulator and meter require.

When should a gas filter cartridge be replaced?

Change the cartridge when the pressure drop across it rises, which shows that particles are building up. The HFA-HFB can carry a clogging indicator, with or without a reed-contact remote switch, and the Mod. 50000 accepts a differential pressure clogging indicator. Drain the impurities that collect at the bottom of the body regularly. The HFA-HFB technical manual covers cartridge replacement for flanged heads and quick-closing heads.

What is the difference between the HFA and HFB filters?

Both are dry cartridge filters for natural gas, town gas and other non-corrosive gases, with design pressure up to 100 bar and PN 16 or Class 150, 300 and 600 flanges. The HFA has in-line nozzles and can be installed vertically or horizontally; the HFA TRC version is vertical only and opens through a quick-opening closure. The HFB has nozzles at right angles, for lines that change direction at the filter.
