A gas control valve sets pressure or flow in a station from a control signal or by hand, instead of relying on the line pressure alone like a self-operated regulator.

The page covers three Pietro Fiorentini valves for natural gas and other filtered, non-corrosive gases: the pneumatic Reflux 919, the electrically actuated Sincroflux regulating valve and the manually operated VLM bypass valve, design pressure up to 102 bar, 1 to 10 inch, for gas networks and industry in Saudi Arabia and the GCC: the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.

Three operating modes

Pneumatic Reflux 919, electrically actuated Sincroflux and hand-operated VLM, for filtered, non-corrosive gases.

Top entry design

Top entry bodies on all three; Sincroflux and VLM internals are serviced without removing the body.

Built-in accessories

DB/819 silencer and SB/82 slam shut fit all three; monitor and HB/97 on selected models.

Hydrogen versions available

Specific versions are available for full hydrogen or natural gas and hydrogen blends.

How to choose a gas control valve

Start with how the valve will be operated.

Pneumatic control: Reflux 919

The Reflux 919 is a pneumatic control diaphragm valve: with a pneumatic positioner it takes a 0.21 to 1.03 bar or 0.42 to 2.06 bar signal, with the electro-pneumatic positioner option 4-20 mA.

Reflux 919 action and range

Direct action (air to close) or reverse action (air to open), fail open or fail close according to EN 334 by version; in pressure control mode it holds 0.5 to 95 barg downstream with 1 to 100 barg inlet.

Electric regulating: Sincroflux

Choose the Sincroflux, also spelled Syncroflux, for electric actuation: a quick opening regulating valve with an electric actuator for pressure and/or flow control, used on power plant fuel gas skids, gas transmission and distribution networks and high load industrial plants.

Sincroflux balance and rangeability

It is a balanced valve, so changes in inlet pressure do not move its control position, and its rangeability reaches 1:1000; the quick opening characteristic gives the largest change in flow at small valve travel.

Manual bypass: VLM

For a station bypass or manual throttling, the VLM is a manually operated shut-off and lamination valve with a hand wheel; a balanced plug eases opening and closing, and a soft insert on the seat improves the seal.

VLM ratings

The VLM flyer gives a maximum inlet pressure of 100 barg and sizes from DN 25 to DN 200, with tightness class VI to ANSI/FCI 70-2.

Size, flanges and built-in safety

  • Sizes and flanges

The Reflux 919 and Sincroflux run from DN 25 to DN 250 (1 to 10 inch), with ANSI 150, 300 or 600 or PN 16 flanges and design pressure up to 102 barg.

  • Shut-off tightness

Both are bubble-tight, with shut-off better than class VIII to ANSI/FCI 70-3; all three valves have top entry bodies.

  • Built-in silencer and slam shut

All three accept a built-in DB/819 silencer and SB/82 slam shut device; the HB/97 slam shut is offered on the Reflux 919 and on the Sincroflux from 4 to 10 inch.

  • Monitor and Cg effect

The Reflux 919 and VLM can also take a monitor; on the Sincroflux and VLM, each built-in accessory lowers the valve Cg by 5%.

  • What to send us

Our Al Khobar team can size the valve from your flow, pressures and noise limit for stations in Jubail, Dammam or Doha.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between direct action and reverse action on the Reflux 919?

Direct action means air to close: the control air closes the valve. Reverse action means air to open. The Reflux 919 is supplied in either configuration, and according to EN 334 the purchased version reacts by opening (fail open) or closing (fail close). Choose fail close where a fault must stop the gas flow, and fail open where supply to downstream users must continue.

What is a bypass and throttling valve used for in a gas station?

It lets an operator shut off a line or control the flow by hand, for example on a bypass while a regulating line is out of service. The VLM does this job: it is a manually operated shut-off and lamination valve for natural gas distribution installations and supply networks for civil and industrial use. A PM monitor, a second plug in the same body, can be added and takes over if the main valve fails.

When should I choose an electric regulating valve like the Sincroflux?

Choose the Sincroflux when the control system drives the valve with an electric motor rather than instrument air, for example on power plant fuel gas skids or in high load industrial plants. It is a quick opening, balanced regulating valve for pressure and/or flow control, rated up to 102 barg, with rangeability up to 1:1000, sizes from 1 to 10 inch and optional silencer and slam shut.

Which standards apply to the Reflux 919, Sincroflux and VLM?

The Reflux 919 and Sincroflux are designed to EN 334 and are bubble tight, better than class VIII to ANSI/FCI 70-3. The VLM has tightness class VI to ANSI/FCI 70-2. All three are certified to the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU (PED) and use ASME B16.5 Class 150, 300 or 600 or PN 16 flanges. Specific versions are available for hydrogen or natural gas and hydrogen blends.
